Dakar 2026: Nwankwo Leads Team Nigeria at Historic Opening

Posted : 01 November 2026

Rosemary Chigozie Nwankwo led Team Nigeria into the spotlight at the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on Saturday, as the country began its campaign at the historic sporting event in Senegal.

Nwankwo, an emerging athletics talent, served as Nigeria’s flagbearer, proudly leading the contingent into the packed Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio amid colourful displays celebrating African culture and sporting excellence.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for Africa, with Senegal becoming the first African nation to host an Olympic sporting event.

The fourth edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games has brought together young athletes from across the world for 13 days of competition across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.

Nigeria is represented by 19 athletes, comprising 12 women and seven men, who will compete in athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball.

Nwankwo is among the country's promising medal prospects, particularly in the women's 100 metres, where she will seek to translate her potential into a podium finish.

The opening ceremony featured vibrant music, traditional dances, colourful performances and elaborate choreography that showcased Senegal's cultural heritage and hospitality.

A major highlight was the arrival of the Youth Olympic flame at the stadium following a journey through Senegal's 14 administrative regions spanning more than 45 days.

The flame was carried around the stadium before the lighting of the official cauldron, symbolising the ideals of peace, friendship and unity associated with the Olympic movement.

Dressed in their distinctive green and white outfits, the Nigerian athletes joined contingents from other participating countries in a celebration that ushered in the competition.

Team Nigeria will now turn its attention to the sporting events, hoping to translate the excitement of the opening ceremony into impressive performances and medals across its six disciplines.
