Daan Hoole of the Netherlands claimed his first-ever Grand Tour stage win with an impressive performance in the individual time trial during stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia. The Lidl-Trek rider clocked a time of 32 minutes and 30 seconds over the 28-kilometre course between Lucca and Pisa, finishing seven seconds ahead of pre-stage favourite Josh Tarling from Great Britain. British national road champion Ethan Hayter rounded out the top three, coming in ten seconds behind Hoole.
Tarling, who had earlier won the first time trial of the race on stage two, was expected to dominate again but couldn’t keep up with Hoole’s pace. The Dutchman, 26, benefited from a favourable weather window, riding on dry roads before heavy rain began impacting the conditions for later starters, including the general classification contenders. Reflecting on his victory, Hoole said he was overjoyed and grateful, admitting it was hard to believe he had won.
Race leader Isaac del Toro of UAE Team Emirates-XRG had a challenging day, finishing 37th, more than two minutes behind Hoole. Despite the time loss, the Mexican rider managed to hold onto the pink jersey, although his teammate Juan Ayuso cut into his overall lead, reducing the gap in the general classification to just 25 seconds after finishing 22nd.
Meanwhile, Simon Yates of Visma-Lease a Bike climbed two spots to fourth overall after finishing 23rd in the time trial. Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic, the defending champion, rebounded from a crash earlier in the race by placing 17th, one minute and 15 seconds off the winning time. Roglic made significant gains on his closest rivals and now sits fifth in the general classification, just one minute and 18 seconds behind the leader.
