Corporate backing grows as Cycling Lagos targets stronger sustainability impact

Corporate support for Cycling Lagos has received a major boost as Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard and other organisations backed the fifth edition of the event.

The competition, organised by Cycling Africa in collaboration with the Lagos State Cycling Association, is scheduled to hold on Saturday, Sept. 5, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The organisers said the growing corporate participation reflected increasing recognition of cycling as a vehicle for promoting healthy lifestyles, environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.

Bamidele Adeleye, President/CEO of Cycling Africa and organiser of Cycling Lagos, said the support would further strengthen the impact of the fifth anniversary edition, which is themed “Trash to Treasure.”

He said the theme was deliberately chosen to draw attention to recycling, environmental consciousness and the economic opportunities that could be created through improved waste management.

Adeleye said Cycling Lagos had evolved beyond a conventional sporting competition to become a platform for advocacy, environmental awareness and sustainable development.

He expressed appreciation to Union Bank, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard, the Lagos State Cycling Association and other supporting organisations for identifying with the initiative.

According to him, the growing involvement of private-sector organisations demonstrates a shared understanding of the need for collaborative efforts in tackling environmental challenges.

“We are particularly encouraged by the support from corporate organisations that understand that cycling can be a powerful platform for communicating important messages about the environment and sustainability,” Adeleye said.

He added that the organisers would use the fifth edition to deepen conversations around recycling and encourage individuals, businesses and governments at all levels to adopt practical measures for creating a cleaner and more sustainable society.

Union Bank, one of the country’s oldest surviving financial institutions, said its support was informed by the wider impact of the initiative on Lagos.

“Our support for this project is in recognition of the impact that this initiative has on the State, which extends beyond sport event into environmental sustainability,” the bank stated.

The organisers said the fifth edition would feature cycling activities for adults and children, as well as advocacy and awareness programmes aimed at encouraging greater participation in cycling and promoting environmental responsibility.

As part of activities marking the anniversary, Cycling Lagos will also host its fifth webinar on Thursday, Sept. 3.

The webinar, themed “Trash to Treasure: Unlocking Recycling Capacity for a Sustainable Future,” is expected to bring together policymakers, environmental advocates, recycling practitioners, businesses and other stakeholders.

The participants will examine practical approaches to expanding Nigeria’s recycling capacity and unlocking the economic and environmental benefits of the waste management sector.

Adeleye said the organisers remained committed to positioning cycling as an effective platform for promoting healthier communities while advancing environmental responsibility, recycling and sustainable development.
