Coetzer Leads South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play After Strong Second Round

Posted : 25 February 2025

Lisa Coetzer delivered a strong performance in the second round of the South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Port Elizabeth Golf Club, posting a two-under-par 70 to take a three-shot lead. She started on the 10th hole and made three birdies before the turn, adding another on the first hole.

However, back-to-back bogeys on the third and fourth holes prevented her from building further momentum. Despite the challenges, she finished the day at five-under-par for the tournament, maintaining a comfortable lead over second-placed Kesha Louw, who shot a one-under 71.

Reflecting on her round, Coetzer was pleased with her strong start, emphasizing the importance of patience and controlling damage after her bogeys. She noted the difficulty of playing in the increasing wind, which made club selection tricky, but credited her experience on links courses for helping her adapt.

Louw, ranked GolfRSA’s No. 1, had an up-and-down round, recording two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine before recovering with birdies on the first and second holes. However, a late bogey on the eighth, after an unfortunate encounter with a tree, prevented her from closing the gap further.

Several players remain within striking distance, with Olivia Wood, Lourenda Steyn, and Casey Twidale tied for third place at one-under-par after solid rounds. Bobbi Brown and Isabella Ferreira followed closely at level-par, with Ferreira posting the lowest round of the day with a three-under 69.

In the contest for the Abe Bailey Trophy, Mogomotsi Sebata leads after carding a 10-over 82, putting her one shot ahead of Christan Booysen. Chantaylee Visser and Mexico’s Ana Catarina Weber Albaitero sit three shots back, setting up a competitive final round.
