Coal City Games: Enugu set for major sports infrastructure boost ahead of 2026 NSF

Posted : 29 May 2026

Enugu State has received a major boost in its preparations for the 2026 National Sports Festival following the approval of critical sports infrastructure projects by the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The approvals, backed by the Federal Government, are expected to transform Enugu into one of Nigeria’s leading sports destinations ahead of the Coal City Games.

Top on the list of approved projects is the construction of an Olympic-size swimming pool, a facility expected to strengthen aquatic sports development and provide athletes with world-class training opportunities.

The swimming complex is also projected to position Enugu as a future host for national and international aquatics competitions, especially at a time when Nigerian swimmers continue to record impressive performances on the global stage.

In addition, the indoor sports hall in the state will undergo a comprehensive upgrade to meet modern standards. The facility hosts several indoor events including basketball, volleyball, badminton, handball, table tennis, and combat sports.

The renovation is expected to improve competition standards, athlete welfare, and fan experience during the festival and beyond.

Athletes’ hostels will also be rehabilitated as part of efforts to provide a more conducive environment for camping, training, and competitions. The improved accommodation facilities are expected to support long-term athlete development programmes in the state.

Beyond the festival, the infrastructure projects are designed to create lasting value by encouraging grassroots sports participation, boosting sports tourism, and generating employment opportunities for youths.

The projects further underline the Federal Government’s commitment to revitalizing sports infrastructure across the country through the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

With preparations gathering momentum, Enugu State is steadily positioning itself to deliver a memorable and world-class edition of the National Sports Festival in 2026.

These comprehensive facility upgrades reflect a strategic investment that extends far beyond the immediate timeline of the Coal City Games. By establishing sustainable, high-standard sports centers, Enugu is laying the foundation for an enduring legacy of athletic excellence and economic growth. The state remains on a clear path to transforming its regional sports ecosystem and showcasing its readiness for top-tier national events.
