Chukwuonye Named Captain as Nigeria Target U19 Women’s World Cup Qualification

Christabel Chukwuonye has been appointed captain of Nigeria’s 14-player Junior Female YellowGreens squad for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Tanzania. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 30 to September 5, with Nigeria targeting a place at the global youth competition.

Chukwuonye, an all-rounder, brings valuable international experience to the leadership role. She was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup and has continued to establish herself as an important player for the senior Female YellowGreens.

The 2026 Kwibuka Women’s T20I Tournament further underlined her importance. Chukwuonye claimed 17 wickets in nine matches during the competition, giving Nigeria another proven match-winner ahead of the demanding qualifier in Tanzania.

Nigeria also have several familiar faces from the previous U19 World Cup campaign. Jessica Bieni, Deborah Bassey, Omosigho Eguakun, Beauty Oguai and Peace Usen are among the players selected, while Chukwuonye now takes over the captaincy as the team begins another important qualification campaign.

Three other former students of Benin Technical College will join Chukwuonye in the squad. Beauty Oguai, Omosigho Eguakun and Peace Usen give the institution four representatives in the 14-player team heading to Tanzania.

The squad also contains wicketkeeper Deborah Bassey and experienced players such as Shola Adekunle and Anointed Akhigbe. The combination gives Nigeria a blend of players with previous international exposure and younger prospects seeking to establish themselves at the U19 level.

Nigeria's immediate objective is to secure one of Africa's qualification places for the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. The pathway is significant because the tournament provides a major platform for developing young players before they progress into senior international cricket.

Chukwuonye has already demonstrated that she can contribute with both bat and ball. Her all-round ability and experience from the previous U19 World Cup should provide an important leadership presence as Nigeria face the pressure of a qualification tournament.

The Junior Female YellowGreens have previously competed against strong African opposition at both youth and senior levels. Their participation in the 2025 U19 World Cup also gave several members of the current squad valuable experience against the world's leading young teams.

The Tanzanian qualifier will therefore represent another test of Nigeria's emerging cricket talent. With Chukwuonye leading the side, the Female YellowGreens will aim to combine their recent international experience with consistent performances to secure Nigeria another appearance on the global U19 stage.
