Chris Gotterup staged a remarkable comeback to claim victory at the Phoenix Open, defeating Hideki Matsuyama in a dramatic play-off. The American started the final round four shots behind the overnight leader but finished strong with five birdies in his last six holes, posting a seven-under-par 64 to reach 16 under for the tournament.
Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, bogeyed the final hole—his only dropped shot in a round of 68—forcing a play-off. The showdown at TPC Scottsdale ended when Matsuyama found the water on the first extra hole, allowing Gotterup to secure the win with a birdie.
Gotterup, who opened the tournament with a 63 and followed with rounds of 71 and 70, expressed his disbelief at the victory. “I didn’t think this would happen, especially after Friday and Saturday, but here we are. Hideki was playing great. I just figured I would stay loose,” he said.
The win marks Gotterup’s fourth PGA Tour title and his second of the season, following his triumph at the Sony Open in Hawaii last month. Meanwhile, world number one Scottie Scheffler narrowly missed the play-off, finishing one shot behind after a final-round 64. Scheffler reflected on his performance, saying, “I played pretty well—only one round where I didn’t have my best stuff. If I get in the house the first day with a couple under par, it’s a little different story today.”
England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick completed the top ten, finishing ninth at 13 under following a final-round 69.
