Chisato Iwai Clinches First LPGA Title with Dominant Win in Mexico

Posted : 26 May 2025

Japan’s Chisato Iwai captured her first LPGA title in dominant fashion by winning the Mexico Riviera Maya Open on Sunday. The 22-year-old delivered a flawless start, birdieing five of her first six holes in the final round to take control of the leaderboard.

She finished with a six-under-par 66 to post a 72-hole total of 12-under 276 at the Mayakoba resort, securing victory by six shots over American rookie Jenny Bae, while South Korea's Kang Hae-ji finished third.

Iwai’s triumph makes her the third Japanese player to win on the LPGA Tour this season, joining Rio Takeda and Chevron Championship winner Mao Saigo.

Already a decorated competitor on the Japan Tour with eight titles, Iwai only joined the LPGA Tour after placing second at the qualifying tournament last December. Her composed play stood out on Sunday as she added birdies on the 10th and 13th holes, building a commanding lead despite a single bogey on the 14th.

Jenny Bae, who had started the day with a one-stroke advantage, faltered early with consecutive bogeys and never recovered enough to threaten Iwai’s lead.

Despite late birdies, Bae finished six shots back but took positives from the week, noting her growing patience and focus under pressure.

Iwai, calm and consistent throughout, became the 20th Japanese golfer to win on the LPGA Tour, capping a dream debut season with a memorable win.
