Chief Samuel Anyamele, widely known as Onwa, has officially redeemed his 10 million Naira pledge to the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN). The prominent businessman and former vice president of the Nigeria Golf Federation had originally made the commitment during an inaugural executive event in February. The funds were presented this week to the National Treasurer, Wasilat Nana Abubakar, who represented LGAN President Lami Ahmed.
The donation arrives at a critical time as Nigeria prepares to host the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT). Scheduled for November 1, this continental tournament is expected to draw top female golfers from across Africa to Nigeria. Anyamele emphasized that hosting such a high-profile event is a massive opportunity to market the country positively on the global stage. He noted that the tournament could help shift international perceptions regarding safety and hospitality in Nigeria.
During the presentation, Anyamele highlighted the significant economic ripple effects that major golf tournaments create. He explained that international competitions drive revenue across multiple sectors, including tourism, transport, and the hospitality industry. Local vendors and small business owners often see a surge in activity when hundreds of delegates and athletes arrive for such events. He urged the government to provide further support to ensure the hosting process meets international standards.
LGAN officials described the 10 million Naira contribution as both timely and inspiring. National Treasurer Abubakar thanked Chief Anyamele for his unwavering dedication to the development of women's sports in the country. She confirmed that the money would be channeled directly into the intensive preparations required for the AACT. The association aims to use this support to build a more robust platform for female athletes nationwide.
The benefactor reiterated that nation-building is a collective responsibility that requires input from the private sector. By investing in the LGAN, he hopes to encourage other stakeholders to contribute to the growth of the game. Beyond the sporting results, the goal of the upcoming championship is to enhance Nigeria’s reputation as a premier destination for international athletics. This donation sets a strong financial foundation for the association as the November start date approaches.
