Chess Olympiad: Nigeria Regain Momentum Ahead of Crucial Round 9 Clashes

Team Nigeria restored momentum at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, with the Open and Women’s teams securing identical 3½–½ victories in Round 8 on Thursday.

The men responded strongly to their 3–1 loss to Libya in the previous round, overpowering Guyana to claim their fourth victory of the competition and move to eight match points.

FM Bomo Lovet Kigigha, FM Abdulrahman Akintoye Abdulraheem and FM Odey Goodness Ekunke all won their respective games, while Bartholomew Emmanuel Okhipo held Anthony Drayton to a draw.

The victory maintained Nigeria’s position in the Open section after entering the 11-round competition as the 84th seed.

The women produced an equally impressive result against Lesotho, with Iyefu Joy Onoja, Sandra Osarugue Omoruyi and Bridget Michael securing wins.

WFM Deborah Ebimobo-ere Quickpen completed Nigeria’s 3½–½ scoreline after drawing with WFM Bonolo Ntsielo.

The result also moved the women to eight match points, with Nigeria ranked 83rd in the section after eight rounds.

Attention now turns to Round 9, where both Nigerian teams face opponents with identical match-point tallies.

The men will confront Tunisia at 3:00 p.m. local time on Friday, with both sides carrying eight match points into the African encounter.

The Nigerian women will also be involved in an evenly matched contest against Zambia, who likewise have eight match points ahead of their meeting.

With Round 9 marking the beginning of the final stretch of the 11-round Olympiad, Nigeria will aim to sustain Thursday’s momentum and improve its overall standing before the competition concludes.

The 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad is scheduled to end on Sept. 27 in Samarkand.
