Chen Yu Fei ends An Se Young's 31-match unbeaten streak at Kumamoto Masters Japan 2023

Posted : 18 November 2023
World No.1 An Se Young's remarkable 31-match unbeaten streak, dating back to July, came to an end in the semifinals of the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2023. The Korean, recovering from a knee injury, faced familiar rival Chen Yu Fei and was defeated in a hard-fought battle, with Chen securing the win at 21-18, 20-22, 21-8. This loss marks An's sixth defeat this year and the first after securing five consecutive titles. Interestingly, her previous defeat, during the semifinals of the Indonesia Open 2023, was also at the hands of Chen. Apart from Chen, the only players to beat An this year are Akane Yamaguchi and Tai Tzu Ying.

An Se Young, sporting a strapping on her right knee, struggled to keep up with Chen for most of the match. Despite forcing a decider and battling hard in the second game, An appeared fatigued in the end, allowing Chen to secure a comfortable victory. Chen Yu Fei, the Olympic champion, is set to face Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the final, who advanced with a straightforward 21-12, 21-13 victory over Beiwen Zhang.

In men's singles, Viktor Axelsen reached his first final since the VICTOR China Open and his seventh final this year, defeating qualifier Takuma Obayashi 21-7, 21-13. He will face Shi Yu Qi in the final, who secured a 21-15, 21-16 win over Chou Tien Chen. The mixed doubles semifinals featured thrilling contests, with Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong surviving match point to beat world champions Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung 20-22, 23-21, 21-13. Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping also saved two match points against Yuta Watanabe/Arisa Higashino, advancing to the final with an 18-21, 21-15, 24-22 victory.

In women's and men's doubles, Liu Sheng Shu/Tang Ning, Zhang Shu Xian/Zheng Yu, Liu Yu Chen/Ou Xuan Yi, and He Ji Ting/Ren Xiang Yu secured their places in the respective finals with victories in straight games and comebacks.
