Charley Hoffman Urges PGA Tour Players to Address Slow Play

Posted : 04 February 2025

Charley Hoffman addressed his fellow PGA Tour players in a letter, raising concerns about slow pace of play and other issues affecting the tour. In his letter, Hoffman acknowledged the ongoing problem of slow play, which has been a challenge for players and fans alike for decades.

He called for players to take more responsibility for their pace, urging them to be ready when it’s their turn and speed up before a rules official intervenes. Hoffman stressed that cutting field sizes would only have a minor effect on reducing the time spent on the course, and players need to be more aware of their pace during rounds.

Hoffman, a four-time PGA Tour winner and a long-time member of the Player Advisory Council, also emphasized the importance of the Tour’s relationship with its broadcast partners. He noted that players should make efforts to help improve the fan experience, whether through on-course interviews or by ensuring that the Tour and its players receive proper coverage. Hoffman highlighted that the focus should remain on showcasing the skill, passion, and competition that defines the PGA Tour.

In addition to discussing pace of play, Hoffman addressed the limited opportunities for golfers to qualify for Signature Events. As a member of the Player Advisory Council, he promised to monitor how the AON Swing 5 is incorporated into the qualification process. He also criticized players for reducing their participation in PGA Tour events while finding time to compete in non-tour events, such as the new TGL and the Race to Dubai.

Hoffman argued that the strength of the Tour lies in the depth of its competitive fields, not in small, exclusive events, and emphasized the need for the Tour to maintain its open competition structure.

Hoffman’s letter called for a renewed commitment to the PGA Tour, urging players to support as many events as possible to ensure the tour remains strong and competitive. He pointed out that the Tour’s success has always been rooted in offering opportunities for players of all levels to compete against the best, and that this tradition should be preserved to maintain the integrity and uniqueness of the PGA Tour.
