The race for honours at the 3rd Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League gathered further momentum on Day Six in Abuja, with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) maintaining its unbeaten streak in both the men's and women's categories to strengthen its title credentials.
As the first phase of the competition approaches its decisive stage, several teams also boosted their playoff ambitions with impressive victories.
In the men's category, league leaders Nigeria Customs Service continued their flawless campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Ajase Ipo. The win extended Customs' perfect run after earlier triumphs over NSCDC, Nigeria Police Force, Defence Spikers, Nigeria Correctional Service and Sunshine Spikers.
Defending champions CNS Spikers also remained firmly in contention after overcoming Kano Pillars 3-1. Having claimed the opening set 25-18, CNS briefly lost momentum in the second set before recovering to take the final two sets and secure another important victory.
Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) reinforced its status as one of the leading contenders by rallying from a set down to defeat the Nigeria Police Force 3-1. The result added to previous victories over UCEM VC, Life Camp VC and Ajase Ipo, leaving NCoS with only one defeat so far in the tournament.
COAS Spikers maintained their impressive form with a commanding 3-0 victory over Life Camp VC, surviving a fiercely contested second set that ended 32-30 before completing the sweep.
NSCDC strengthened its playoff hopes with a comfortable straight-set victory over Sunshine Spikers, while UCEM Volleyball Club recorded a morale-boosting 3-0 win against Offa VC.
In the women's competition, the Nigeria Customs Service continued to dominate, defeating Fire Service 3-0 to preserve its unbeaten record. Customs have now secured commanding victories over Benue Queens, VIP & Partners, Kada Emeralds and Fire Service, underlining their status as favourites for the title.
COAS Spikers claimed one of the day's biggest results by defeating long-time rivals CNS Spikers 3-1. The victory further extended COAS' recent dominance over their military counterparts following previous successes in the Super Cup and earlier meetings this season.
Following the match, COAS head coach Elishama Elam praised his players' resilience after they recovered from trailing by as many as seven points during one of the sets.
"We told the girls it is not over until it is all over. They gave their best and were resilient to earn the win," Elam said.
He, however, cautioned against underestimating CNS Spikers despite COAS' recent dominance.
"We have established that dominance over them, but we cannot underrate them. The players were told to give their very best, and I am glad they won the game," he added.
Elam also refused to be drawn into title predictions, insisting that his team remains focused on taking each match as it comes.
Elsewhere, NSCDC edged VIP & Partners 3-2 in one of the most thrilling matches of the day, dominating the deciding set 15-6 after both teams shared the opening four sets.
Anambra Queens continued their resurgence with a straight-set victory over Life Camp VC, while Olalomi Royal Angels swept aside Excelsior VC in straight sets.
Benue Queens also staged a remarkable comeback, recovering from the loss of the opening set to defeat Kada Emeralds 3-1 and remain firmly in contention for a top finish.
After six days of competition, the Nigeria Customs Service remains the only unbeaten side in both divisions, while COAS Spikers, CNS Spikers, NSCDC, Nigeria Correctional Service, Benue Queens and Anambra Queens continue to mount strong challenges as the battle for playoff places and championship honours intensifies in Abuja.
