Defending champions CNS Spikers began the second phase of the 3rd Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Volleyball Premier League with a 3-1 victory over NSCDC, avenging their first-phase defeat at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The Naval side, who lost 3-2 to NSCDC in their previous meeting, demonstrated improved form to secure an emphatic victory as nine matches were decided on the opening day.
CNS Spikers edged the opening set 27-25 before NSCDC levelled the contest with a narrow 26-24 win. The champions subsequently took control, winning the third set 25-14 before completing the victory with a commanding 25-10 result in the fourth.
CNS coach Sani Mohammed said the victory reflected his players’ determination to recover from their earlier setback and defend their title.
“In the first phase of the league, we lost to them 3-2. This is our first game, and we beat them this time 3-1,” he said.
“We have prepared to ensure we redeem our image because of how it was in the first phase.
“We want to defend our title as the defending champions and, with the grace of God and the support of the Chief of Naval Staff, we will be rewarded at the end of the season.”
Nigeria Customs Service also enjoyed an impressive start, winning their opening matches in both the men’s and women’s categories.
The Customs women swept NAF Rockets aside 3-0, taking the first two sets 25-16 before sealing the contest 25-9.
Their male counterparts followed suit with a straight-set victory over Ajase Ipo, winning 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13.
Customs coach Suleiman Ajeigbe dedicated the victories to Comptroller-General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, saying the team had been challenged to win every match.
“We have been given a marching order by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to ensure that we win every game,” Ajeigbe said.
“Just like we did last year, we are here again. It is a good start for us, as we dedicate our first win to the Comptroller-General of Customs.”
In the women’s competition, Fire Service survived a five-set battle against Life Camp VC to claim a 3-2 victory in the day’s most closely contested encounter.
Fire Service won the opening set 25-22, but Life Camp responded with an identical score to level the match. The teams exchanged victories again, with Fire Service taking the third set 25-21 before Life Camp forced a decider with a 25-20 win.
Fire Service eventually prevailed 15-10 in the decisive set.
Excelsior VC also secured an important result, defeating Olalomi Royal Angels 3-1. After winning the opening sets 25-21 and 25-18, Excelsior surrendered the third 17-25 before recovering strongly to take the fourth 25-12.
Excelsior coach Dennis Eleri welcomed the victory, describing the three points as important to his team’s efforts to improve on their first-phase performance.
“We didn’t make enough points in the first phase, and starting the second phase with the three points is something nice,” he said.
Eleri added that his players exploited their opponents’ weaknesses in reception, using effective serving to gain an advantage.
“We had a lot of points from service error. It was a good win for us. We hope to accumulate more points because we need them to move up the table,” he said.
CNS Spikers also recorded a dominant 3-0 victory over Benue Queens in the women’s division, restricting their opponents to just four points in the opening set before winning the remaining sets 25-16 and 25-11.
NSCDC recovered from losing the opening two sets against Vipers Spikers to secure a 3-1 victory. The Civil Defence side won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19, conceded the third 21-25, and then closed out the match 25-17.
In the men’s category, Defence Spikers defeated Sunshine Spikers 3-0 in a competitive encounter, winning 25-22, 26-24 and 25-23.
COAS Spikers also claimed a 3-1 victory over Nigeria Correctional Service. They won the opening set 25-21 before their opponents levelled with a 25-23 result. COAS Spikers subsequently took the third set 25-16 and sealed the match 25-20.
