Celebrations galore as Ghana guns for doubleheader, 67th independence, African Games opener

Posted : 04 March 2024

The Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) stated on Monday that Ghana will celebrate its 67th Independence on March 6, and two days later, on March 8, will unveil the 13th African Games.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NOC, Tony Nezianya, the African Games is a sporting spectacle in the mold of the African version of the mini Olympic Games.

"A high-profile event, no doubt the Games will be a celebration showcasing the talent and potential of African athletes on a continental stage.

"Spread over multiple cities - Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast, unlike previous Games, the Ghanaian edition will allow for a larger scale event and greater participation in various regions.

"The Games will serve as a preparation ground for African athletes to train and perform well at the Paris Olympic Games, from July 8 to August 11.

"It also provides valuable experience and exposure to help them compete at the highest level," he said.

Nezianya added, "Participation in the Accra Games will provide African teams with some chances to qualify in eight Olympic sports that will be on offer.

"This will increase the representation of African nations at the Paris Olympics and highlight the progress and development of continental sports.

"The fresh and competitive teams from the continent's competitions are expected to put up exceptional performances on the world stage in Paris.

"This will showcase the strength and talent of African athletes and raise the profile of African sports globally.

"Overall, the expectations from the 13th African Games 'Accra 2024 are focused on using the event as a stepping stone toward success at the Paris Olympic Games.

"It also improves the representation of African nations and showcases the excellence of African athletes on a global platform," he said.

The NOC Publicist revealed that 22 athletes are already on the ground in Accra, while on March 3, the remainder of 200 athletes will arrive on March 6, and the rest on March 11.
