Richard Carapaz secured victory in Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia, completing the 186-kilometer route from Viareggio to Castelnovo ne’ Monti with a well-timed attack. The Ecuadorian rider made his decisive move nine kilometers from the finish, pulling away from the peloton on a demanding stage.
It marked his first win of the season and added a fourth Giro stage triumph to his career. Despite feeling less than his best, Carapaz capitalized on the right moment to break away and described the final stretch as similar to a time trial effort.
The win also boosted Carapaz's standing in the general classification, trimming 14 seconds off the gap between him and race leader Isaac del Toro. Del Toro, riding for UAE Team Emirates, crossed the line in second place and maintained his overall lead while retaining the coveted pink jersey.
Carapaz, who won the Giro in 2019, now has eight Grand Tour stage victories and appears determined to mount a challenge for the title once again.
Isaac del Toro continues to lead the general classification with a 31-second advantage over compatriot Juan Ayuso. Both riders finished with the same time on the day, staying close in the battle for overall victory.
Meanwhile, Italian cyclist Lorenzo Fortunato delivered for the home crowd by further extending his lead in the mountains classification. He claimed maximum points on two of the three categorized climbs, pushing his total advantage over Ayuso to 102 points.
Further back, Giulio Ciccone climbed to seventh in the overall standings after finishing third on the stage, right behind Del Toro. Antonio Tiberi also remains within reach of the leader, sitting just over a minute behind in the general classification. With several challenging stages remaining, the competition at the Giro remains intense, and the battle for both the general and mountains classifications is heating up.
