Cameroon Sweep Nigeria 3-0 to Reach African Volleyball Championship Quarter-Finals

Posted : 28 August 2026

Nigeria's senior women's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Cameroon at the 2026 CAVB Women's African Nations Championship in Nairobi on Thursday. The result was Nigeria's second loss in three Group C matches and confirmed Cameroon's place in the quarter-finals with a perfect record.

Cameroon controlled the contest from the opening set at the Kasarani Indoor Arena. The Lionesses took the first set 25-20 before increasing their advantage with a 25-15 win in the second.

Nigeria struggled to produce a response in the third set. Cameroon maintained its pressure and closed out the match 25-16, completing a straight-sets victory and finishing the group stage without dropping a set.

The result capped a dominant group-stage campaign for Cameroon. They had earlier defeated Ghana 3-0 before producing another straight-sets win over Tunisia, with the latter victory coming by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23.

Cameroon's attacking strength was again evident against Tunisia, where Djeutchoko led all scorers with 14 points. The team also recorded 45 attack points and seven aces in that match, underlining the quality that carried them through Pool C.

Nigeria had entered the Cameroon match after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Ghana. The Nigerians won the five-set battle 25-21, 21-25, 25-11, 11-25 and 18-16 after surviving a tense deciding set.

That victory had revived Nigeria's hopes after they opened the tournament with a 3-1 defeat to Tunisia. Nigeria won the first set 25-18 but Tunisia responded by taking the next three sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-20.

Cameroon finished at the top of Group C with three wins from three matches. Nigeria ended the group stage with one victory and two defeats, while Ghana's later 3-2 win over Tunisia added further drama to the final group standings.

The tournament carries major qualification importance. The African champion will earn a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, while the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.
