Cameron Young surprised himself with an impressive 8-under-par 64 on Thursday, taking the first-round lead at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas. After a few months off, Young’s strong performance at Albany Golf Club placed him two shots ahead of Justin Thomas.
Despite not feeling his best in practice, Young was pleased with how well he controlled his game, particularly with his driver. “I feel like I was really comfortable, and that's a huge key out here,” he said.
Young carded eight birdies and no bogeys during his round, including a 21-foot birdie putt on the par-3 second hole to set the tone. His last birdie came at the 17th hole, with a 14 ½-foot putt.
While Young acknowledged missing a few fairways, he felt he was generally in great position throughout the day, especially with the putter. "I made a couple putts early, which was nice," he added, noting that the course’s par 5s and drivable holes provide great opportunities for birdies.
Justin Thomas shot a 6-under 30 on the back nine, recovering from a bogey on the front nine to finish with six birdies, including four in a row from holes 14 to 17. At 5-under, a group of players—including World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, defending champion of the tournament, and Patrick Cantlay—are tied for third. Scheffler, who made a change to his putting grip, felt positive about the results, saying the adjustments helped improve his stroke.
