Bud Cauley produced a stunning final-round performance to win the Canadian Open and secure his first PGA Tour title, completing one of golf’s most inspiring comeback stories. The 36-year-old American finished on 17-under-par 263 in Caledon, Ontario, after shooting a composed five-under 65 in the final round.
Cauley, competing in his 239th PGA Tour event, took control of the tournament with a decisive birdie chip on the 12th hole. That moment sparked a strong finish in which he strung together four birdies in five holes, building a commanding lead down the stretch and holding firm to seal victory.
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick finished second, two shots behind, after an impressive closing-round 64 that briefly put him in contention. Norway’s Viktor Hovland secured third place at 14 under after a solid week of consistent play, but neither could match Cauley’s late surge.
The victory carries enormous emotional weight for Cauley, whose career was severely impacted by a car accident in 2018. As a passenger in the crash, he suffered six broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a fractured leg, injuries that threatened to end his professional golfing career entirely.
Although he made a brief return to competition four months after the accident, complications in 2020 forced him out of the game for an extended period, keeping him away from the PGA Tour until 2024. His return has been marked by patience, resilience, and gradual rebuilding of his form.
Speaking after his victory, Cauley reflected on the uncertainty he faced during his recovery, admitting there were moments when even he was unsure whether he would ever play professionally again. He credited the support of family, friends, and medical staff for helping him return to competitive golf.
He also paid tribute to his wife, acknowledging the difficult journey they endured together during his recovery years. The win, he said, represented not only personal success but also a gesture of gratitude for those who stood by him during his most challenging period.
Starting the final round just one shot behind the leader, Cauley remained patient early on before accelerating on the back nine. His decisive run of birdies shifted the momentum firmly in his favour and ultimately secured a memorable victory.
For Fitzpatrick, the week ended with encouragement despite missing out on the title. The Englishman climbed the leaderboard with a strong final round and highlighted improvements in his putting, which he believes will benefit his game moving forward.
The Canadian Open triumph marks a defining moment in Cauley’s career, transforming years of setbacks into a breakthrough victory and writing a powerful new chapter in his journey on the PGA Tour.
