Bryan Newman produced a stellar round of four-under-par 68 in the third round of the R&A Amateur Africa Championship at Leopard Creek, taking a commanding five-stroke lead heading into the final round.
A standout moment came on the 13th hole when he holed an eagle from 200 yards with a seven-iron, which, combined with four birdies and just two bogeys, lifted him to a ten-under-par total for the tournament. His performance left him well ahead of the halfway leader, Roelof Craig, who shot a three-over-par 75 to drop to five-under.
Newman’s round was built on a flawless front nine, where he made three birdies without dropping a shot, setting the stage for a strong back nine. While bogeys on holes 10 and 12 slightly interrupted his momentum, the eagle on 13 propelled him to finish strong, including a birdie on the 18th.
In contrast, Craig struggled on the final hole, making a double-bogey seven. Newman, mindful of his game strategy, emphasized his decision to lay up on the par-fives, including the second and 15th holes, where precision off the tee was key.
With a five-stroke advantage, Newman’s experience and course management will be crucial as he aims for victory. Having already accumulated several notable titles, including the 2023 Nomads National Order of Merit and the 2023 Scottish Boys’ U16 Open Championship, Newman is no stranger to leading from the front.
Should he win, he would earn a series of prestigious exemptions, including entry into The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush and the Investec South African Open. Despite the potential rewards, Newman remains focused on playing his game and avoiding unnecessary risks as he eyes the title.
