Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer, Inkosi Brou, will spearhead the country’s campaign at the 2026 African Senior Fencing Championships scheduled for June 1 to June 6 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Nigeria Fencing Federation unveiled an eight-man contingent for the continental competition, expressing confidence that the athletes are prepared to challenge for honours.
Federation President Adeyinka Samuel said the fencers have undergone intensive preparations under the guidance of the national coach, Ibrahim Alogba.
According to Samuel, the athletes received both tactical and technical training aimed at ensuring a strong performance in Abidjan.
“Our national coach has given them the necessary preparation to ensure they compete well at the championship.
“They are determined and ready to win medals for Nigeria,” he said.
Brou, who will be making his second appearance at the African Senior Championships, is expected to provide leadership for the Nigerian team in the sabre category.
Also competing in sabre are Folayemi Akinyosoye and Phoenix Olen.
In the épée event, Adebodunrin Thomas and Sara Idongesit will represent Nigeria in the women’s category, while Diekolola Johnson, Leonard Aninye, and Mahathir Idongesit will compete in the men’s division.
Coach Alogba expressed optimism about the team’s chances, noting that the championship would also serve as valuable preparation for the 2026 Commonwealth Championships later in the year.
“I am confident in the team and hopeful that more home-based athletes will continue to compete alongside their foreign-based counterparts.
“This tournament is important for our development ahead of future international competitions,” Alogba said.
The upcoming tournament in Côte d’Ivoire represents a pivotal opportunity for the Nigerian contingent to assert their presence on the continental stage. With rigorous preparation and a balanced mix of talents, the federation aims to secure historic podium finishes. The collective dedication of the athletes and coaching staff indicates a promising campaign for Nigerian fencing as they embark on this international challenge.
