Brazil Defeat Nigeria by Seven Wickets in Kwibuka T20 Women's Tournament

Posted : 16 June 2026

Nigeria’s senior women's cricket team suffered a disappointing setback at the ongoing Kwibuka T20 Tournament in Rwanda. The Female Yellow Greens were beaten by seven wickets against a clinical Brazil side on Monday afternoon. This loss marks the second time the West Africans have fallen to the South Americans in this year's edition.

Brazil won the toss at the Gahanga Cricket Stadium and elected to field first. Nigeria struggled to build massive partnerships against a very disciplined bowling attack. They eventually posted a modest total of 111 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Adeshola Adekunle top-scored for the Nigerian side with a hard-fought 38 runs off 44 balls. Salome Sunday offered some aggressive resistance by contributing 25 runs from 22 deliveries. Opening batter Esther Sandy also remained unbeaten on 15 runs to close out the innings.

The Brazilian bowling response was spearheaded by an inspired performance from Maria Ribeiro. She tore through the Nigerian batting order to claim figures of three wickets for 31 runs. Her excellent spell restricted the African opposition from accelerating late in the innings and earned her the Player of the Match award.

Brazil chased down the target comfortably by reaching 112 for three in 18.2 overs. They sealed the victory with 10 balls left to spare. Lindsay Boas anchored the successful chase with a fine knock of 35 runs off 38 deliveries.

Laura Agatha added 26 runs to put Brazil in total control of the match. Monnike Machado then finished unbeaten on 18 runs to guide her team over the finish line. Christabel Chukwuonye, Adeshola Adekunle, and Favour Eseigbe all claimed one wicket each for Nigeria in the second innings.

The annual tournament is organized by the Rwanda Cricket Association to honor victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This latest defeat leaves Nigeria with three wins and two losses from five matches. The team must now win their upcoming fixtures to improve their standings and keep their final hopes alive.
