Nigeria’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance to seal a crushing 136-run victory over Ghana in the ongoing Fifth Women’s Invitational T20I tournament in Lagos on Sunday.
After setting a competitive total of 159 for four, the hosts turned the contest into a one-sided affair with a devastating display in the field at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval.
Earlier, Nigeria laid a solid foundation with the bat after winning the toss. Captain Piety Luck and Victory Igbinedion provided an explosive start, racing to 44 runs within the opening three overs. Luck struck 23 off 17 balls before falling in the sixth over, with the team reaching 56 for one at the end of the power play.
The innings was later steadied by Christabel Chukwuonye, whose composed 43 off 27 balls ensured Nigeria maintained control. Despite Igbinedion retiring hurt on 18 and a brief contribution from Salome Sunday, Nigeria posted a strong 159 for four in their 20 overs.
However, it was with the ball that Nigeria truly dominated.
Ghana’s chase unraveled almost immediately, collapsing to 13 for five inside seven overs under relentless pressure. The innings never recovered, slipping further to 20 for eight as Nigeria’s bowlers maintained tight lines and sharp discipline.
Peace Usen led the charge with an impressive three wickets for nine runs in four overs, including a maiden, while Mbam Henrietta matched the intensity with three for seven. Favour Effiong also made a key impact, picking up two wickets for just two runs.
Usen, who was named Player of the Match, expressed satisfaction with her contribution, highlighting the team’s collective effort in securing another convincing victory.
The result further underlines Nigeria’s strong form in the tournament as they continue their impressive run on home soil.
Nigeria's dominant performance with both bat and ball ensured a comprehensive victory that leaves Ghana searching for answers. The clinical nature of the bowling attack, led by Peace Usen, dismantled the opposition's chase before it could ever gain momentum. This emphatic win solidifies Nigeria's position as a powerhouse in the Fifth Women's Invitational T20I as they look toward the final stages of the competition.
