Benjamin Follett-Smith made an unexpected stop at Houghton Golf Club on his journey back to Zimbabwe and immediately made an impact, carding an eight-under-par 63 to lead the Fortress Invitational after Thursday’s opening round.
The Zimbabwean golfer, who had just returned from the DP World Tour, decided to enter the Sunshine Tour event as part of his preparations before heading back to Europe for DP World Tour Qualifying School. His familiarity with Houghton helped him produce a bogey-free round.
Follett-Smith got off to a flying start, making two eagles within his first five holes. His aggressive approach off the tee and strong long game allowed him to maintain momentum and finish three shots clear of Jonathan Broomhead, Daniel van Tonder and Stals Swart, who all opened with five-under 66s.
Van Tonder could prove to be a major threat over the remaining rounds, having finished tied for sixth at the Joburg Open at the same venue earlier this year. Follett-Smith, meanwhile, was delighted to return to the Sunshine Tour, where he began his professional career.
The 2026/27 campaign marks his first Sunshine Tour appearance of the season after spending much of the previous two years competing in Europe. The four-time winner across the Sunshine Tour and HotelPlanner Tour said he remains committed to supporting the circuit and appreciates the opportunity to compete close to home.
With three rounds still to play, Follett-Smith has given himself an ideal platform for a potential wire-to-wire victory. He believes the early advantage will allow him to remain patient and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on himself as he looks to build on his impressive opening round.
