Benin Unity Cup Kicks Off in Benin City with Flag-Off Ceremony

The maiden edition of the Benin Unity Cup, a grassroots football competition, officially began at the Crescent Sports Club Complex in Benin City. The opening ceremony was attended by the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Desmond Enabulele.

Sponsored by Senator Neda Imasuen, the Benin Unity Cup aims to identify and nurture young football talents across the Edo South Senatorial District. The tournament also seeks to create pathways for international exposure and opportunities with overseas clubs for standout performers.

Enabulele praised Senator Imasuen for the initiative, describing the tournament as a vital platform for talent discovery and sports development in Edo State. He emphasized the importance of nurturing discovered talents and revealed that the Commission will deploy scouts to monitor matches. Exceptional players could be drafted into the Commission’s feeder team or even considered for placement with Bendel Insurance FC by January. He also called for more tournaments across football, basketball, athletics, and aquatic sports.

Senator Imasuen expressed appreciation to participants and guests, stressing that passion and commitment are key to developing local talent. He noted that his investment in sports is motivated by genuine interest rather than politics. The senator further disclosed that international collaborations are underway, with partners from Sweden and the Netherlands already involved, and scouts from these countries will be assessing promising players during the tournament.

“This initiative began as a thought and has now become action, which will lead to even greater achievements,” Imasuen said. “Our goal is to harness and showcase Edo talents to the world.”

The Benin Unity Cup continues this week, providing a platform for young footballers to impress both local and international scouts. The opening match between Ovia North-East and Ikpoba-Okha ended goalless, with the remaining fixtures scheduled for Saturday, November 22, at the same venue.
