Ben Griffin started strong with an eagle on the opening hole and went on to claim his first individual PGA Tour victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge, finishing with a 1-over-par 71 on Sunday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. His winning score totaled 12-under 268, and he sealed the win by sinking a crucial 4-foot par putt on the final hole.
Throughout the tournament, Griffin mostly matched Germany’s Matti Schmid, but Sunday marked the first round where their scores differed, with Schmid shooting a 72 to settle for second place.
At 29, Griffin was competing in his 94th PGA Tour event and notched his second win in about a month, having previously won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in a team event with Andrew Novak. Bud Cauley finished third at 9 under after carding a 67.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, aiming for a third consecutive title, ended up tied for fourth at 8 under alongside England’s Tommy Fleetwood. Griffin’s impressive round included a less-than-15-foot eagle putt on the par-5 first hole and a birdie on the second. Schmid battled back with a late birdie on the 18th to pressure Griffin, but a costly bogey at 17 kept him from overtaking the leader. Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler, starting four strokes behind Griffin, struggled with a 74 and finished tied for 16th at 5 under.
