Bayelsa State has officially declared its intention to host the 2028 National Sports Festival, following the state's strong performance at the 22nd edition held in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Governor Douye Diri made the announcement during a reception for the state’s athletes at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House in Yenagoa.
Team Bayelsa finished third according to the National Sports Commission’s official medal table. However, Governor Diri expressed his disbelief, claiming that the team rightfully placed second behind perennial champions Delta State. He cited irregularities observed during the final hours of the Games, stating that the gap between Bayelsa and host state Ogun was questionable.
Emphasizing the role of sports as a tool for youth empowerment, Governor Diri reaffirmed Bayelsa’s commitment to sport development, highlighting the ongoing construction of a 25,000-capacity stadium in Igbogene, Yenagoa, which will support the state's 2028 hosting bid.
In recognition of their efforts, the governor announced generous cash rewards:
Additional allocations were made to the Ministry of Sports Development, Sports Council staff, LOC members, and festival secretariat staff.
Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, and the Director of Sports, Braveman Wodi, both praised Governor Diri’s unwavering support for sports, describing the rewards as a testament to his passion and investment in Bayelsa's youth and athletic excellence.
