Bayelsa’s Small Squad, Big Impact at National Arm-Wrestling Championship

Posted : 12 April 2026

Bayelsa State once again underlined its growing reputation in Nigerian sports by delivering an outstanding performance at the 2026 National Arm-Wrestling Championship in Lagos—despite competing with a limited number of athletes.

The championship, held from April 9–12 at CMS Grammar School, Bariga, saw Team Bayelsa emerge as one of the standout performers, clinching an impressive haul of 14 medals: 7 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze. What makes the feat even more remarkable is that the state competed with just six to seven athletes, far fewer than many of the over 20 participating teams.

Guided by head coach Timi Koku and assistant coach Maiika Tonkumor, the Bayelsa contingent showed resilience and determination throughout the competition.

Koku led from the front, contributing two gold medals, while Tonkumor added two silvers to the tally. Their leadership proved vital, especially after early logistical challenges threatened the team’s participation.

Other athletes who made significant contributions include Udochi Chidinma Goodness, Amadi Silas Uzochukwu, Blessing Ogungunre Adebimpe, and Ajao Oluwasegun Tunde, all of whom played key roles in securing the state’s podium finishes. The team’s efforts were coordinated by secretary Deborah Obolo.

Support from key stakeholders, including Bayelsa State Director of Sports Aye Andrew and Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, also played a crucial role in motivating the athletes to excel against the odds.

Bayelsa’s performance not only highlights its strength in arm-wrestling but also raises important questions about its untapped potential. With a fuller squad and sustained support, the state could have extended its dominance even further.

As the state government, led by Governor Douye Diri, continues to promote inclusivity and development in sports, attention is now turning to athlete welfare and increased investment.

Many believe that with the right backing, Bayelsa could solidify its position as a powerhouse in arm-wrestling and beyond.
