Bayelsa Celebrates Olympic Day as Diri Pledges Sustained Investment in Sports

Posted : 05 July 2026

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to sports development, describing it as a vital tool for youth empowerment, healthy living, and social unity.

The governor made the pledge during the 2026 Olympic Day celebration in Yenagoa, where Bayelsa joined the global Olympic movement in commemorating the annual event.

Represented by the State Head of Service, Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, Diri said sports remain one of the key pillars of his administration's development agenda, stressing that the government will continue to invest in facilities and programmes that enable young people to thrive.

The Olympic Day celebration featured a symbolic walk from two starting points at Ekeki Park to the Samson Siasia Stadium, alongside demonstrations of various sporting activities and the presentation of certificates to participants.

Speaking on this year's Olympic Day theme, "Let's Move," the governor noted that it reflects the importance of embracing physical activity and the enduring values of Olympism, including excellence, friendship, and respect.

He disclosed that the state government is currently constructing a 30,000-capacity stadium at Igbogene, a 5,000-seat stadium at Sampou in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, as well as a training pitch at Government House, Onopa, to ease pressure on the Samson Siasia Stadium.

Diri also defended the recent restructuring of Bayelsa United, explaining that the reforms were aimed at repositioning the club for a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the end of the 2026/27 season.

"As a government, we believe sports is a powerful instrument for development, health, and unity. We remain committed to providing the facilities, support, and opportunities our athletes need to succeed," he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Chief Daniel Igali, represented by Permanent Secretary Pereyi Efeke, described the Olympic Games as a global platform that promotes peace, friendship, and unity among nations.

Representing the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Habu Gumel, Peace Epia said Olympic Day continues to inspire individuals and teams to pursue excellence while upholding the values of respect and friendship.

Director of Sports at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, Bibowei Lambert, noted that the annual celebration encourages participation and strengthens bonds across communities. He added that Bayelsa is fully preparing for the 2026 National Sports Festival in Enugu, while the second edition of the State Sports Festival is already underway.

Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, Braveman Wodi, said this year's theme was introduced to encourage more people to embrace active lifestyles and tackle the growing challenge of physical inactivity.

The Olympic Day celebration reinforced Bayelsa State's commitment to expanding sports infrastructure, promoting grassroots participation, and creating opportunities for athletes to excel. With ongoing investments and preparations for upcoming competitions, the state aims to strengthen its position as one of Nigeria's leading sporting destinations.
