Barcelona will serve as the starting point for the 2026 Tour de France, with organizers and local officials unveiling a three-day route showcasing the beauty of Catalonia. The race will pass through iconic locations such as La Rambla and the Sagrada Família, offering a spectacular backdrop for cycling’s most prestigious event.
Barcelona’s mayor, Jaume Collboni, expressed pride in hosting the "Grand Départ" on July 4, emphasizing that it was a long-cherished dream for the city, which has previously welcomed major sporting events like the Olympics and the America’s Cup.
The opening stage will feature a 19.7km team time-trial that concludes at the Olympic Stadium, passing key landmarks including the Olympic Port and the Sagrada Família. This format is expected to favor teams like Visma-Lease a Bike, home to Jonas Vingegaard, over defending champion Tadej Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates.
The second stage will begin in Tarragona and loop back to Barcelona, covering 178km, while the third stage will start in Granollers and head toward France, with its final destination set to be revealed in October along with the complete 21-stage route.
Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme highlighted Barcelona’s significance, recalling the achievements of Spanish cycling legends like Miguel Indurain and Luis Ocaña. He anticipates an electrifying atmosphere, especially as the race climbs Montjuïc, home to the 1992 Olympic Stadium and the temporary ground for FC Barcelona.
Following previous starts in Copenhagen, Bilbao, and Florence, Barcelona’s Mediterranean setting will add to the Tour’s rich legacy. The 2025 edition, however, will mark a return to tradition, with the race remaining exclusively in France, beginning in Lille.
