Bangladesh Close In on Historic Test Win as Australia Struggle

Bangladesh moved closer to a historic first Test victory in Australia after a disciplined bowling display left the hosts 161-4 at the close of day three in Darwin.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz delivered a crucial breakthrough when he dismissed Steve Smith for 44. Smith attempted to work the off-spinner but sent a leading edge back towards the bowler, leaving Australia four wickets down and still 67 runs behind.

Australia survived the remainder of the session without losing another wicket, with Cameron Green unbeaten on 43 and Alex Carey on 19. The pair will now have the responsibility of helping the hosts erase the deficit and set Bangladesh a challenging target on the final day.

Earlier, Bangladesh extended their overnight total of 351-6 to 426, adding 75 runs before being bowled out shortly after lunch. Miraz played a key role with a patient 65 from 154 deliveries, while Josh Hazlewood finished with 6-89 and reached the landmark of 300 Test wickets.

Bangladesh's lower order proved difficult to dislodge as Miraz guided the tail and helped the visitors establish a commanding 228-run first-innings advantage.

Australia's second innings began poorly as Hasan Mahmud removed both openers. Jake Weatherald was bowled for a duck before Travis Head fell for 17, putting Bangladesh firmly in control.

Marnus Labuschagne and Smith briefly steadied the innings, but Taijul Islam broke the partnership by dismissing Labuschagne for 31. Miraz then removed Smith to leave Australia in serious danger of suffering a rare home defeat.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto praised his players for their character and resilience, while the team now needs six more wickets to secure what would be its first Test victory on Australian soil.

Australia have never previously lost a home Test to Bangladesh, making the visitors' position after three days even more significant. Green and Carey will resume on day four knowing Australia must first overcome the deficit before attempting to build a defendable fourth-innings target.
