Ayisat Yusuf Academy Mourns Player Killed in Ogun-Lagos Road Accident

Posted : 05 November 2026

Nigerian women's football has been thrown into mourning following the death of a player from Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy in a road accident involving members of the team.

The tragic incident occurred while the academy's team was travelling from Ikenne, Ogun State, to Lagos to honour a scheduled league fixture. Several other players sustained injuries, while the team's driver was also seriously affected.

The players were heading to the Olympic Pitch, Sonya, in Ijesha, Lagos State, for their scheduled match when the accident happened.

The academy's Chief Executive Officer, Ayisat Yusuf, confirmed the incident in a statement shared on social media. The former Nigerian international described the development as a devastating loss for the academy and everyone associated with the team.

Yusuf expressed deep sorrow over the death of the young footballer, explaining that the players shared a bond that extended beyond their involvement in football.

She said the girls were more than teammates, describing them as members of one family and an important part of everything the academy had built.

"As we approach the end of the year, it is heartbreaking that we find ourselves dealing with such a devastating experience instead of celebrating the hopes and achievements we had looked forward to.

"My thoughts and prayers are with every injured girl, our team driver and all those affected by this tragedy," Yusuf wrote.

The academy boss also extended her condolences to the family of the deceased player, acknowledging the pain caused by the unexpected loss.

She appealed to families, friends, partners, football stakeholders and members of the public to support the affected players and their families during this difficult period.

According to Yusuf, some of the injured players require urgent medical attention and further medical investigations. However, the academy has not disclosed the exact number of injured persons or the identity of the player who lost her life.

The academy assured that the welfare and recovery of the injured footballers and the team's driver remained its immediate priority. It also promised to provide further information as updates become available.

The tragedy has attracted attention across the Nigerian football community, particularly within women's football, where the academy's loss has renewed concerns about the safety of players travelling by road to fulfil competitive commitments.

The incident also comes shortly after another road accident involving Nigeria National League side Crown FC on October 15, 2026. The club's driver, Yinusa Popoola Amole, later died from injuries sustained in that accident while the team was travelling to a pre-season tournament.

For Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy, attention remains focused on supporting the family of the deceased player and ensuring that those injured receive the necessary medical care.
