Australia Dominate Day One of Women's Ashes Test

Posted : 30 January 2025

England's hopes of avoiding a 16-0 clean sweep in the Women's Ashes are already on the back foot after being bowled out for 170 on day one of the one-off Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Leg-spinner Alana King took 4-45, helping dismantle England's lineup in just 72 overs. The only resistance came from all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt, who fought hard for 51 runs off 129 balls, while the rest of the team succumbed to a series of wasteful dismissals.

England's innings started poorly as Maia Bouchier was caught behind off Kim Garth's opening over, and it took just four balls for their batting woes to resurface. Garth also dismissed captain Heather Knight for 25, and Tammy Beaumont was trapped lbw by Darcie Brown for eight.

A brief recovery came through a 50-run partnership between Sciver-Brunt and Sophia Dunkley, bringing England to 47-3, but the afternoon session saw Australia exploit England's weaknesses against spin, with King and Ash Gardner combining to take four wickets and stifle any further progress.

England's bowlers then took to the field for 22 overs under the floodlights with the pink ball, hoping for a breakthrough in favorable conditions. However, Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland batted sensibly, guiding Australia to 56-1 at the close of play, trailing by 114 runs. Australia will be confident heading into day two with their deep batting lineup, especially having only lost debutant Georgia Voll for 12 runs to Lauren Bell.

Having already won all six of the preceding white-ball matches, Australia now looks set on achieving a historic 16-point sweep in the series, a feat that has never been accomplished in the multi-format Ashes. The Australians' commanding performance on day one leaves England with much to do if they are to avoid the humiliation of a clean sweep.
