Australia Clinch Ashes Series with Convincing Third-Test Win in Adelaide

Posted : 21 December 2025

Australia confirmed their dominance in the 2025/2026 Ashes series by defeating England by 82 runs on the final day of the third Test in Adelaide. Following emphatic wins in Perth and Brisbane, this result gave the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead after just 11 days of play, matching one of the quickest series conclusions in Ashes history.

England resumed on Sunday at 207-6 and displayed some resistance as Jamie Smith (60), Will Jacks (47), and Brydon Carse (38 not out) contributed meaningful innings. However, Mitchell Starc’s three-wicket haul (3-62) for Australia, supported by Scott Boland’s dismissal of Josh Tongue, ensured England were bowled out for 352 while chasing a daunting 435-run target.

Australia’s first innings saw Alex Carey score 106, Usman Khawaja add 82, and Mitchell Starc contribute 54, helping the team post 371 before Jofra Archer took 5-53 for England. England replied with 286, led by Ben Stokes’ 83 and Archer’s 51, but Scott Boland and Pat Cummins shared six wickets between them. In the second innings, Travis Head’s 170 anchored Australia’s total of 349, while Josh Tongue took four wickets for England. In response, England’s chase was never truly in doubt, with Crawley’s 85 and Smith’s 60 offering some resistance before Australia closed out the match.

The result has raised questions regarding England’s leadership, as captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum face scrutiny over the team’s preparation and execution. Stokes acknowledged the disappointment but emphasized the need to focus on the remaining two Tests. McCullum took responsibility for the team’s shortfalls, admitting that adjustments in preparation could have been better managed.
