Australia and South Africa Shine as Pakistan Crashes Out of U19 Women's T20 World Cup

Posted : 23 January 2025

Australia and South Africa concluded their group-stage campaigns unbeaten at the U19 Women's T20 World Cup in Malaysia, while Pakistan faced elimination after a shocking loss to Ireland. Day 4 saw the completion of group-stage matches in three of the tournament's four groups, with several teams advancing to the Super Six stage.

Australia's comprehensive victory over Nepal and South Africa's dominance over Nigeria ensured their progression as group leaders, while Ireland's upset win over Pakistan secured their spot in the next round.

Australia overcame early pressure from Nepal's bowlers to secure an 83-run win and top Group D. After losing three early wickets, Caoimhe Bray and Eleanor Larosa anchored the innings with a 72-run stand before Hasrat Gill and Chloe Ainsworth added late runs to post 139.

Australia's bowlers restricted Nepal to just 56 in response, taking wickets consistently to ensure a comfortable victory. Nepal finished winless at the bottom of Group D and missed out on the Super Six stage.

Ireland stunned Pakistan in a rain-shortened nine-over game, winning by 13 runs using the DLS method. Alice Walsh's 31 off 19 balls powered Ireland to 69 runs, setting Pakistan a revised target of 73. Despite the chase, Pakistan managed only 59/7, sealing their exit from the tournament. Ireland advanced as the third team from Group B, leaving Pakistan to reflect on their disappointing campaign.

South Africa remained dominant with a 41-run victory over Nigeria in another rain-affected match. The Proteas posted 49 runs in their eight overs, with Simone Lourens contributing 25. Seshnie Naidu's two wickets helped restrict Nigeria to just 24/8, ensuring South Africa finished atop Group C. Nigeria, despite the loss, also progressed to the Super Six stage as the group's second-placed team.
