Austin Bautista Wins Fortress Invitational for Second Sunshine Tour Title

Posted : 12 October 2026

Australia’s Austin Bautista claimed his second Sunshine Tour title of the season after producing a composed final-round performance to win the Fortress Invitational at Houghton Golf Club in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Bautista carded a four-under-par 67 in the final round to finish on 16-under-par, securing a five-shot victory over defending champion Warwick Purchase, who closed with a 68 to finish at 11-under-par. The Australian sealed his triumph with a birdie on the final hole, completing an impressive week of golf.

The 26-year-old began the final day with a two-shot advantage and quickly strengthened his position with three consecutive birdies between the second and fourth holes. Although he dropped a shot on the ninth and missed an eagle opportunity on the 10th after a three-putt, he remained composed and focused on the remaining holes.

Bautista explained that experience had taught him the importance of maintaining his composure after setbacks. Rather than allowing mistakes to affect his confidence, he concentrated on executing his next shot and maintaining his rhythm throughout the round.

His victory further strengthened his position in the Courier Guy Sunshine Tour Order of Merit, where he moved into second place behind leader Samuel Simpson. Bautista expressed appreciation for the support he has received on the circuit, adding that he enjoys competing in South Africa and across Africa because of the welcoming atmosphere among fellow players.

Purchase finished second at 11-under-par, while Zander Lombard, Altin van der Merwe and Jonathan Broomhead shared third place on 10-under-par. Broomhead's performance was particularly notable, as the former rookie secured a place among the tournament's leading finishers.

Fortress Real Estate chief executive Steven Brown praised the quality of competition and the performances delivered throughout the tournament, congratulating Bautista on becoming the fifth winner of the Fortress Invitational.

Charles Dlamini received the Sunshine Tour caddie medallion in recognition of his role as Bautista's winning caddie. Meanwhile, Tristen Strydom produced one of the weekend's memorable moments by recording a hole-in-one on the par-three 14th, earning a place in the season-ending Airlink Aces Shoot-Out and 100,000 Skybucks from Fly Airlink.
