Nigeria’s men’s team mounted a spirited comeback to defeat Saudi Arabia 3-2, highlighting a mixed opening day for African sides at the 2026 ITTF World Team Championships in London.
After an early setback, Nigeria relied on the experience and composure of Quadri Aruna, who led from the front to overturn the tie. Youngster Matthew Kuti struggled in his outings, but Aruna, alongside Olajide Omotayo, delivered when it mattered to secure a crucial first group victory.
The win gives Nigeria early momentum in a challenging group, with tougher tests ahead against top seeds Hong Kong and continental rivals South Africa.
Elsewhere, Egypt underlined their status as one of Africa’s strongest teams with a hard-earned 3-1 win over Thailand. Despite a bright start, the Egyptians were pushed before eventually closing out the tie with authority.
Madagascar also made a statement, edging Mongolia 3-2 in one of the most dramatic encounters of the day. Fabio Rakotoarimanana emerged as the hero, holding his nerve in a tense deciding match to seal victory after Mongolia had fought back from two games down.
In another Group 6 contest, Greece overcame Algeria 3-1, recovering from a brief wobble to secure the win. Ioannis Sgouropoulos set the tone early, while veteran Panagiotis Gionis bounced back from an earlier defeat to clinch the decisive point.
However, Africa’s fortunes were less encouraging in the women’s competition, where Egypt stood alone as the continent’s only winning side in the opening round. Nigeria, Algeria, and Rwanda all fell short, leaving the Egyptians to carry Africa’s challenge heading into the next phase.
With the race for knockout spots intensifying, early victories could prove decisive as teams battle for a place among the last contenders in London.
The opening day highlights the resilience of African teams on the global stage, spearheaded by the veteran leadership of Quadri Aruna. As the tournament progresses, the focus shifts to whether these nations can maintain their momentum and secure vital qualification spots in the knockout rounds.
