Posted : 19 December 2024

A non-governmental organization (NGO), Additional Plus Sports and Education Initiative (APSE Initiative), on Wednesday restated its commitment to promoting girl-child education and sports in Nigeria.

APSE made the pledge during the 2024 edition of its education and sports program designed for girls aged 6–11 years.

The one-week sports and leadership boot camp, tagged **"Awaken the Giant, She Can 4.0,"** began on Monday and features a series of events focused on various sporting activities and education.

The APSE Initiative partnered with Ladies in Sports International to deliver the program.

The transformative program, according to its convener, Oluwaseun Nariwoh, aims to empower more than 80 young girls from underserved communities in Mowe, Ogun State.

**"The 'Awaken the Giant, She Can 4.0' boot camp is a one-week sports and leadership initiative designed to foster the holistic development of young girls,"** Nariwoh said.

**"We often overlook our duty to prepare young girls early, focusing solely on boys.

"Looking at sports academies, we frequently see mostly boys, while girls are left at home.

"We recognized the need to equip our girls as early as possible to face future challenges, and this is the reason behind this education and sports initiative,"** she added.

Nariwoh explained that the program offers activities such as table tennis, basketball, dance, piano playing, drumming, French language learning, reading, and other side attractions.

"The objectives of the program are to bridge the gender equality gap, improve physical fitness and coordination, enhance creativity and self-expression, and develop basic French language skills.

"Other benefits include boosting reading culture, comprehension, and confidence; exposing participants to entrepreneurship and career opportunities; and fostering grit, character, focus, precision, and mental alertness.

"Awakening the giant in our young girls is crucial for achieving gender equality and building a sustainable future.

"Gender inequality poses significant challenges to health, social, economic, and psychosocial growth," she noted.

Nariwoh also revealed that APSE 2024 received a significant boost from the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), which organized a national coaching clinic during the weeklong event.

"To further enhance this year's 'Awaken the Giant' program, the NTTF staged a two-day National Coaching Table Tennis Seminar for coaches on the 17th and 18th.

"This seminar aligns with the weeklong sports and leadership boot camp, particularly focusing on empowering women with leadership and management skills to produce outstanding players.

"These are future champions who will make Nigeria proud at podium-level events," she said.

The one-week sports and leadership boot camp is supported by the Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP), the U.S. Department of State, Additional Sports and Entertainment Pro Limited (ASEP), Africa Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Nosa Creative Design, and Yemade Equipment.
