Anifat Ganiyu from Osun State claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 41kg category at the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo.
Osun State’s para powerlifting star, Anifat Ganiyu, has once again brought honour to both her state and Nigeria by winning a bronze medal in the women’s 41kg category at the 11th World Para Powerlifting Championship taking place in Cairo, Egypt.
Ganiyu, who had earlier shone at the National Trials with a personal best lift of 97kg, surpassed all expectations in Cairo by lifting 104kg, setting a new lifetime record. Her total lift of 297kg earned her the bronze medal in a highly competitive field.
The Osun-born athlete, who previously won gold for Team Osun at the Gateway Games 2025 (National Sports Festival) in Ogun State, has successfully translated her national success onto the global stage. Her latest achievement cements her place among the top para powerlifters in the world.
Before the global championship, Ganiyu and fellow Osun athlete Razaq Muftau Olawale were selected to represent Team Nigeria in the Para Powerlifting event. Their inclusion highlighted Osun State’s rising reputation as a hub for elite para athletes and a consistent contributor to Nigeria’s sporting success.
This year’s World Para Powerlifting Championships, held from October 9 to 18, 2025, marks a historic moment as the first edition of the event to be hosted on African soil. Ganiyu’s podium finish adds a special significance to Nigeria’s campaign, contributing to the team’s impressive early medal count, which already includes two golds.
Officials from the Osun State Sports Council praised Ganiyu’s achievement, lauding her hard work, perseverance, and commitment. They described her bronze medal as a reflection of the state’s continuous investment in sports development and its growing support for athletes with disabilities.
“Anifat’s performance embodies the resilience and determination that define Osun’s athletes,” one official remarked. “Her success will undoubtedly inspire a new wave of para sports talents from the state.”
With her bronze medal in Cairo, Anifat Ganiyu joins the ranks of Osun-born athletes making global impact, further solidifying the state’s position as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.
