Gary Anderson booked his spot in the second round of the PDC World Championship following a tense 3-2 victory against Adam Hunt. The 54-year-old two-time world champion, known as the Flying Scotsman, faced stiff resistance from world number 84 Hunt but rallied from a 2-1 deficit to secure progression.
Anderson, seeded 14th, will now face the winner of the match between Connor Scutt and Simon Whitlock. Speaking after his win, Anderson told Sky Sports, "That's probably the best Adam has played all season. The first game is the hardest, but I'm through."
The first set saw Anderson maintain his composure to take it 3-2, but he struggled in the second, missing a double top that allowed Hunt to level the match with a confident 72 checkout. Hunt continued his momentum by taking the third set, but Anderson recovered in the fourth and dominated the deciding set after an early break of throw, leaving Hunt unable to mount a comeback.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Welsh amateur David Davies caused a minor upset in his World Championship debut by defeating Belgium’s Mario Vandenbogaerde 3-0. Davies’ impressive performance earned him a clash with defending champion Luke Littler in the next round, thanks to a checkout average of 37.5%.
Andrew Gilding overcame a spirited challenge from 22-year-old Cam Crabtree, winning 3-1 with an average of 97.89, while Luke Woodhouse bounced back from a slow start to defeat Croatia’s Boris Krcmar 3-1.
