12 Countries Compete for Laurels at All-Africa Para Badminton Championship

Posted : 09 October 2025

The All-Africa Para Badminton Championship has officially opened in Abia, with about 158 athletes from 12 countries competing for laurels across different categories.

The historic tournament, featuring 19 events, is scheduled to run until October 12 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The championship follows the recently concluded First Abia Para Badminton International Tournament, held from September 30 to October 5 at the same venue.

Karin Bester, the Badminton World Federation-appointed referee for the tournament, confirmed that the participating countries include Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, and Egypt.

She also listed Mauritius, Mozambique, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, Rwanda, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, and host nation Nigeria among the participants.

Bester, a South African, explained that players competed in the group-stage round-robin format on the first day, with the top performers advancing to the knockout stage.

In an interview, Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti of Abia for his commitment and significant investment in ensuring the success of this historic event.

He noted that the ongoing tournament aims to crown the champion of Africa, whereas the First Abia Para Badminton International Tournament welcomed participants from across the world.

Orbih also revealed the federation’s excitement over the governor’s approval to host the second edition of the Abia Para Badminton International Tournament in 2026.

“Abia has made it happen, and we are very happy because this is the first time in West Africa that such events are being hosted back-to-back,” he said.

He added, “Some countries will host one year, but not the next. Abia has consistently delivered.”

Orbih further shared that Brazil, Peru, and other countries that participated in the First Abia Para Badminton International sent messages praising the hospitality and organization of the tournament.

“So what we aim to do is improve on the performance of this year’s edition,” he said.
