The Alfred Dunhill Championship has returned to Johannesburg for the first time in 20 years, offering a nostalgic experience for many of the players in this week’s field as they walked through the gates of Royal Johannesburg.
The tournament, co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, has attracted a stellar lineup, including a number of former champions led by Major winner Louis Oosthuizen. The East Course, ranked among the top three in Gauteng, provides both a challenge and a homecoming for the golfers.
Defending champion Shaun Norris returns with fond memories of his career-defining win at Leopard Creek last year. “Winning the Alfred Dunhill Championship last year was massive for me. Every South African wants to win this tournament, and it was a special week for me,” said Norris. “There’s a little bit of extra emotion when defending a title. Being in Johannesburg and staying at home makes it a bit more relaxed. It’s a great course and a demanding test.”
Former champions Branden Grace, the only golfer to have won both the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, and Richard Sterne are also excited to revisit the East Course, where they’ve both previously claimed titles.
Germany’s Marcel Siem, who won the tournament in Johannesburg in 2004, expressed his delight at returning: “It feels like I’m defending the title 21 years later. I was just 24 back then, and it was the kickstart to my career. The people in Joburg were amazing, and it meant a lot to me.”
Rising South African star Casey Jarvis brings confidence after recent success on the Sunshine Tour, including two wins in three weeks. “I’m feeling very confident. Heading into a week like this on a course I know well, with some momentum, is very special,” Jarvis said. Young Spanish talent Angel Ayora, who finished tied fifth in last year’s Alfred Dunhill Championship and in this year’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, is equally thrilled to return. “It’s a special event for me. I love being here in South Africa – the people, the golf courses, the weather. I’m just happy to be part of it again,” he said.
With a mix of seasoned champions and emerging stars, the Alfred Dunhill Championship’s return to Johannesburg promises an exciting week of competition and memorable moments on the historic East Course.
