Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy Share Halway Lead at Chilly PGA Championship

Posted : 16 May 2026

The second round of the 108th PGA Championship concluded on Friday at the Aronimink Golf Club. American golfers Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy emerged as the co-leaders at the halfway mark of the tournament. Both players handled the difficult weather and pin positions to finish at four under par. Their total score of 136 is the highest 36-hole lead at this major tournament since 2008.

Smalley earned his position at the top despite a chaotic back nine. He suffered three consecutive bogeys after making the turn; however, he recovered well to card a one-under-par 69. He sealed his round with a crucial birdie on the final hole.

McNealy also experienced late difficulties during his second round. He reached six under par at one stage before dropping two shots near the end of his round. He ultimately signed for a three-under-par 67 to share the tournament lead with Smalley.

A crowded chasing pack remains right behind the surprise leaders. Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and Chris Gotterup are just one shot back at three under par. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas are also looming closely at two under par.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy recovered well from a poor opening round to make the cut. He shot a three-under-par 67 on Friday to move to one over par for the tournament. Meanwhile, two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau missed the weekend cut despite a late afternoon surge. The tournament remains wide open heading into the weekend rounds.
