Alec Segaert Wins First Grand Tour Stage as Eulalio Extends Giro d’Italia Lead

Posted : 22 May 2026

Belgium’s Alec Segaert celebrated his first-ever Grand Tour stage victory after producing a decisive late attack on stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia. The 175km route from Imperia to Novi Ligure was expected to end in a sprint, but Segaert’s well-timed move disrupted the sprinters’ plans and secured a memorable solo win.

The 23-year-old launched his attack after identifying an opportunity late in the race, explaining that he had anticipated the move since the previous evening. He capitalised on a fast pace in the closing climbs, where sprint teams were under pressure and key rivals had already been dropped.

Behind him, his Bahrain-Victorious teammate Afonso Eulalio strengthened his grip on the overall Giro d’Italia lead. The 29-year-old gained valuable time through intermediate sprint points, extending his advantage over pre-race favourite Jonas Vingegaard to 33 seconds.

Several sprint contenders, including Jonathan Milan and Paul Magnier, were unable to contest the finish after being dropped on the Bric Berton climb more than 50km from the end. This opened the door for breakaway specialists and aggressive riders to shape the final kilometres.

In the closing sprint for the minor podium places, Belgian rider Toon Aerts finished second, while Uruguay’s Thomas Silva took third. Britain’s Ethan Vernon crossed the line in fourth for NSN Cycling Team after a strong effort in the reduced group.

Segaert’s victory marks a major milestone in his career, confirming his ability to compete and succeed at the highest level of stage racing.
