Louis Albertse, the defending champion of the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions, has praised the event as a testament to South Africa’s golfing depth. The official launch of this year’s tournament took place on Monday at Waterfall City, with several Sunshine Tour stars in attendance.
The tournament, scheduled from May 22-25 at Royal Johannesburg’s prestigious East Course, will mark the beginning of the Sunshine Tour’s 2025/26 season. Albertse, who triumphed in the inaugural edition, reflected on his victory, highlighting the challenging course and the thrill of winning, which earned him the R1 million top prize.
The competition will once again assemble a diverse field of champions from various levels of South African golf, including amateur and professional players from both the men’s and women’s divisions, as well as top competitors from the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA).
Professionals from the Sunshine Tour and the Sunshine Ladies Tour will vie for the lucrative first-place prize, ensuring a highly competitive tournament. Albertse acknowledged the formidable talent on display, particularly noting the strong challenge posed by Sunshine Ladies Tour professional Casandra Alexander, who finished in a tie for second place last year.
Looking ahead, Albertse emphasized the significance of the tournament in setting the tone for the season. He credited his victory as a key confidence booster, propelling him into international competition with renewed self-belief. He also underscored the event’s role in showcasing the country’s golfing talent, expressing admiration for the growing strength and competitiveness of South African golf across all levels.
