Alana King’s Record-Breaking 7-18 Leads Australia to Dominate South Africa

Posted : 25 October 2025
Alana King produced a record-breaking 7-18 as Australia bowled out South Africa for 97, securing a dominant win in their ICC Women’s World Cup clash.

Australia’s Alana King delivered a sensational bowling performance to claim career-best figures of 7-18, dismantling South Africa’s batting lineup and guiding her team to a dominant victory in their ICC Women’s World Cup top-of-the-table clash at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Saturday.

After Australian captain Tahlia McGrath won the toss and chose to bowl first, King’s seven-over spell — which included two maidens — tore through South Africa, who were bundled out for just 97 runs in 24 overs. Her figures not only set a new record for the best bowling performance by an Australian woman in ODIs but also marked the best-ever in an ICC Women’s World Cup match.

South Africa began positively, with captain Laura Wolvaardt smashing seven boundaries in a quickfire 25-ball knock during an opening stand of 32 with Tazmin Brits. However, once Wolvaardt fell to King at short mid-wicket, the innings quickly unraveled. Brits was trapped lbw by Kim Garth shortly after, and from there, the Proteas collapsed under relentless pressure.

King’s spin wreaked havoc as she clean-bowled Annerie Dercksen, Sinalo Jafta, Nadine de Klerk, and Masabata Klaas, while also dismissing Sune Luus and Chloe Tryon. Only Jafta (29), de Klerk (14), and Wolvaardt (25) reached double figures. Gardner added a wicket late on, dismissing Ayabonga Khaka for a duck to wrap up the innings.

Despite Jafta’s brief resistance with a flurry of boundaries, South Africa’s effort was undone by Australia’s precision bowling, which conceded just one wide in 24 overs. The defeat left South Africa still seeking only their second-ever win over Australia in 19 encounters.

With this emphatic victory, Australia are on track to face India in Thursday’s semifinal, while South Africa will take on England on Wednesday in the first semifinal.
