Akshay Bhatia Claims Arnold Palmer Invitational with Play-Off Victory Over Daniel Berger

Posted : 09 March 2026

Akshay Bhatia triumphed at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, defeating fellow American Daniel Berger on the first sudden-death play-off hole. Berger, who had maintained the lead since the opening round, faltered on the par-four 18th, missing a seven-foot putt, while Bhatia secured par to claim his third PGA Tour title.

The 24-year-old Bhatia entered the final round just one shot behind Berger but produced a sensational back-nine performance. He recorded four birdies, including a 57-foot putt on the par-four 11th and an eagle on the par-five 16th, finishing with a three-under-par 69. This brought him to 15 under for the tournament, level with Berger, who carded a 70.

Reflecting on his win, Bhatia said, "Everyone knows when you show up to Bay Hill it's going to be a test and to play one of the hardest golf courses. And to succeed is really cool." His victory marked his first PGA Tour title since the 2024 Texas Open, which he also won in a play-off.

Berger, 32, who has not won on the PGA Tour since 2021, had led by five shots after the second round. However, his advantage was reduced to one shot by Sunday morning due to the delayed completion of the third round. "Obviously it didn't go the way I wanted it to," Berger said. "But at the start of the week, if you told me I would have a chance on the 18th hole to win Bay Hill, I would be ecstatic. So a lot of positives, a lot of things to learn from."

Other notable performances included Americans Cameron Young and Sweden's Ludvig Aberg, who tied for third place at 12 under. World number one Scottie Scheffler struggled to a 73, finishing tied for 23rd at two under. England's Harry Hall ended in a tie for ninth at eight under, while Northern Ireland's five-time major winner Rory McIlroy withdrew before the third round due to back spasms.
