Akpata Unveils 10-Point Agenda for Cricket Development in Nigeria

Posted : 23 September 2025

Uyi Akpata, the re-elected President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), has unveiled a comprehensive 10-point agenda aimed at strengthening the development of cricket in Nigeria.

Akpata revealed the plan following his unopposed victory at the NCF elections, where he secured all 47 votes cast on Saturday at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Also re-elected unopposed was Wale Obalola, who retained his position as Vice-President with 47 votes.

Akpata stated that his immediate priority would be the establishment of zonal cricket associations across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These associations will focus on grassroots growth, infrastructure development, governance reforms, and the creation of robust zonal structures.

He explained that the zonal bodies would facilitate grassroots programmes and foster closer partnerships with state governments. “This is not a one-man journey; it will take all of us working together,” he said.

The president described the recent zonal elections as a significant milestone in improving inclusiveness and legitimacy in cricket governance. “This is the first time we’re seeing such strong state-level involvement. It’s a big step forward.”

Akpata also announced plans to invest in cricket infrastructure and establish high-performance centres to support elite athletes. Youth development through school cricket programmes remains a key component of his agenda.

He emphasized gender inclusion, stating that the NCF would expand participation through policies supporting female athletes. Additionally, capacity building for coaches and officials will be strengthened, alongside increased collaboration with government and international partners.

The administration will prioritise good governance, regulatory compliance, and long-term sustainability. Akpata recalled that in 2021, the NCF reviewed and adopted its constitution to align with global best practices, submitting it to the International Cricket Council, the National Sports Commission, and the Nigerian Olympic Committee. “Let the record reflect that the constitution was properly ratified and recognised,” he noted.

He assured that the 2025 elections were conducted transparently under the supervision of an independent electoral committee. While acknowledging minor concerns, he stated that all issues would be addressed within the framework of the constitution. “Disagreements are part of democracy. What matters is how we resolve them constructively.”

Akpata reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, unity, and accountability. “The future of cricket in Nigeria looks promising if we stay focused, work together, and remain accountable,” he concluded.
