African Men’s Junior Handball Championship: Nigeria Unveils 16-Man Squad for Abidjan

Nigeria’s Under-18 Men’s Handball team has stepped up preparations for the 33rd African Men’s Junior Handball Nations Championship with the unveiling of its final 16-man squad for the continental competition.

Head coach Emmanuel David released the squad ahead of the championship, which is scheduled to take place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from September 5 to 12.

The Nigerian cadet team will campaign in Group B alongside two-time champions Algeria, Angola and Madagascar in what promises to be a demanding preliminary round.

The team has been intensifying preparations at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B, of the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, as the players and technical crew fine-tune their plans for the championship.

The selected goalkeepers are Attahiru Ab Sahabi, Obabori Samuel, Iorngohol Amos and Ganiu Aduragbemi.

Others on the final list are Isyaka Mustapha, Kareem Faruk, Akanni Olayinka, Musa Mohammed, Jackson Nelson, Sani Suleiman, Chuks Moses Egwuelu, Yusuf Suleiman, Abaaka Simon, Igwele Emmanuel, Saka Muktar and Oladeinde Oluwasegun.

David will be assisted on the technical bench by coach Cole Olatunde.

Nigeria will be aiming to revive its pedigree in the competition, having previously enjoyed success on home soil when it won the championship in Lagos in 1980.

The country has also reached the podium on three other occasions, finishing as runners-up in Bauchi in 1984 and claiming bronze medals in Cotonou and Marrakech, Morocco, in 2018.

The upcoming championship therefore provides another opportunity for the young Nigerian players to establish themselves on the continental stage and help the country improve on its recent performances.

With Algeria, Angola and Madagascar standing in their way in Group B, the Nigerian side will need to combine tactical discipline, physical strength and consistency to progress deep into the competition.

The team’s preparations in Abuja are expected to continue ahead of its departure for Abidjan, where Nigeria will begin its campaign on September 5.
