Africa Youth Handball: Nigeria U-18 Face Tunisia in Crucial Opener

Nigeria’s U-18 men’s handball team will begin their quest for a maiden continental title when they confront former champions Tunisia on Tuesday at the 22nd Africa Men’s Youth Handball Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The encounter at the Palais des Sports presents an early test for coach Abdulhakim Yakubu’s young side, who will be aiming to make a positive start against one of the competition’s established forces.

Nigeria are drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria and Madagascar, making the opening fixture particularly important as the team seeks to position itself strongly for the knockout stages.

The Nigerian youngsters will subsequently face Algeria and Madagascar as they continue their campaign for continental honours.

The team’s arrival in Abidjan comes after Nigeria’s U-20 men claimed a bronze medal at the 33rd Africa Men’s Junior Handball Championship, held at the same venue, providing an encouraging backdrop for the younger generation.

Nigeria have previously come close to winning the U-18 continental championship but are yet to lift the title.

The country finished runners-up to Benin Republic at the inaugural edition held in Abidjan in 2000 before securing another podium finish with bronze at the 2018 edition in Marrakech, Morocco.

The latest edition in Abidjan offers Nigeria another opportunity to improve on those performances while providing the players with valuable international exposure.

Beyond the battle for the continental crown, the championship carries additional significance as it serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2027 IHF Men’s U-19 Handball World Championship.

With Africa’s leading young handball nations competing for continental supremacy and qualification opportunities, Nigeria will hope to turn its strong historical performances into a decisive breakthrough, beginning with Tuesday’s encounter against Tunisia.
